Lawrence had met George Bernard Shaw briefly in March 1922, and on the strength of that wrote to him in August, asking him if he would read his book. He warned him not to talk of it as 'I don't want people to know that the book exists', although of course a large number of people already did know of it. (1) Shaw consented to read SP, but it was to be some time before Lawrence received the detailed response for which he waited so anxiously.
