There is no Chapter XI in the subscribers' edition. After the decision was made to omit the original first chapter, the re-numbering of chapters was only continued as far as the redesignation of Chapter XI as Chapter X, but this was rectified in the first trade edition. It is difficult to believe that the omission of a Chapter XI was purely an oversight, since this discrepancy becomes so obvious in the detailing of the chapter contents in the main synopsis pages. When the omitted first chapter was reinstated in the 1940 trade edition, it was headed Introductory Chapter, to avoid renumbering yet again.
The chapters are numbered in Roman figures - centred above the text - whereas in the synopsis at the beginning of the book the chapter references are given in Arabic numerals. This oddity is retained in the trade edition.
