Having graduated from Jesus College, TEL was a young archaeologist in need of a job, and now we must give a passing nod in the direction of Magdalen College, Oxford, represented here by its famous tower. Through Oxford's very efficient corridors of influence, in December 1910 TEL was awarded a Senior Demyship by Magdalen for postgraduate studies, worth £100 a year, and it can be no small coincidence that Hogarth was a Fellow of this same college. By the spring of the following year, backed by this Magdalen funding, TEL was Carchemish-bound for three years on Hogarth's British Museum expedition.
