University of Oxford -
Officer Training Corps

While at Jesus College, TEL also became of member, from October 1908 to December 1910, of the Oxford University Officers Training Corps, a section of the army which trained University of Oxford undergraduates for a commission. This extraordinarily posed photograph shows TEL in uniform, complete with puttees, (seated, left, front row), at the annual camp expedition held at Tidworth Pennings in the nearby county of Wiltshire in the spring of 1910. Other OTC training was done mainly at weekends. TEL joined the Infantry section, in which he would have learned basic tactics and shooting on the miniature range.
